Why Chinese Medicine?

Chinese Medicine is one of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, with a rigorous documented history spanning over 2500 years. It is based on the holistic theory that good health is a product of balance within the body and mind.  Traditional Chinese Medicine theory teaches that we all have energy flowing through the body, called Qi, and that any blockage to this flow of energy may eventually manifest as illness.

Chinese Medicine is somewhat unique in that it places great emphasis on the prevention of disease. In ancient China, Chinese doctors were paid to keep their patients well. If the patient fell ill, the payment ceased until the patient got better. This method ensured that practitioners regularly monitored their patient’s health in an effort to keep them well.

To this day, the emphasis on preventive health is still very much a feature of Chinese Medicine. Chinese Medicine also stresses the interaction between the mental, emotional and physical health of the patient, in both diagnosis and treatment of illness.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, treatment is patient specific.  It aims to treat the root cause of the disease as well as symptoms. The various methods used include Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture (including electro-stimulating acupuncture), Cupping, Moxibustion, Tuina (Chinese Remedial Massage) and Diet-Therapy. Chinese Medicine has been shown to be effective and safe in the treatment of a wide range of ailments and disorders.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the primary treatment at Point of Health Ltd, which involves inserting very fine single use disposable needles into the skin at very specific points in the body. These are points on the body where the energy of the body is most concentrated and often near major nerves and arteries of the body. According to Chinese Medicine theory, the Qi or energy flowing through the body does so through specific channels called meridians. Illness, dysfunction or ailment may occur when there is blockage to this flow of energy through the meridians. The aim of acupuncture is to restore function by stimulating the nervous and endocrine system, and unblocking the natural flow of energy within the meridians to restore harmony.

Common sensations felt by patients are tingling, aching, itching, heaviness or nothing at all around the needle point. These sensations are known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as ‘de qi’, which is the arrival of energy at those locations. The improved energy flow and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture promotes both physical and emotional well- being. This method of treatment is an excellent way to address an array of issues including musculo-skeletal dysfunction, digestive issues, energy levels, medical ailments and even stress related issues.

Traditional Chinese Cupping in Edmonton

Cupping

Cupping therapy can be used effectively to help heal sore muscles, old sports injuries, as well as a gentle remedy to treat common colds/flu. It involves the application of heated glass/plastic/silicone cups that vacuum seal over the skin, producing a immune mediated inflammatory response in the skin which allows for the removal of metabolites associated with injury or pain.  Cupping is also able to gently stretch the fascial planes of the body, allowing for a sense of relaxation and easing of tension.

Cupping can be an effective alternative treatment for people who are nervous about needles, and wish to softly introduce themselves to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Herbal Medicine

Kate uses both western and Chinese herbals to custom blends each formula specifically to the patients’ individual health needs. While herbal medicine formulas are often not the most pleasant tasting brews, they are generally palatable and most certainly effective.  The general mode of the herbal medicine is through a loose tea form but tincture and topical formulas are also available when appropriate.
